Memphis makes it easy to enjoy the season with a wide array of summer activities. These are our three favorite ways to spend a Southern summer day in Memphis, TN.

3 Great Summer Activities in Driving Distance of Memphis, TN

1. Shelby Farms Park

Spanning 4,500 acres, one of the nation’s largest urban parks is located right here in Memphis. You could spend days exploring Shelby Farms Park, with more than 40 miles of multi-use hiking, biking, and walking trails. On the hottest days of summer, stop by the Water Park Sprayground. The park also features laser tag, a treetop obstacle course, horseback riding, and even a resident herd of buffalo you could spot during your visit.

In addition to these fun ways to spend a day, the park has more than 20 lakes and bodies of water where you can fish for largemouth bass, bream, crappie, and catfish. You can visit Shelby Farms Park between sunrise and sunset on any day of the year. It’s located at 6903 Great View Dr N and connects with downtown Memphis by the 10.65-mile Shelby Farms Greenline.

2. Whet Thursday at the Metal Museum

If you’re fascinated by the Metal Museum in Memphis, now’s your chance to visit after-hours. This cultural attraction offers free admission on Thursday, July 27, and Thursday, August 31, from 5 to 7 p.m. You can enjoy live metal smithing demonstrations, musical performances, food trucks, and lawn games. Exhibits showcase the art and craft of final metal and include both permanent and rotating collections as well as a sculpture garden.

The Metal Museum is found at 374 Metal Museum Dr. If you can’t make either of the Whet Thursday events, you can check out the museum and its acres of grounds between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. from Tuesday through Sunday. Regular admission costs $8 for adults, $6 for seniors, $5 for students with ID and military members, and $4 for kids ages 5 to 17.

3. Dixon Gallery and Gardens

Once a private home, the Dixon is now a Memphis cultural institution with a mission to bring the community together around horticulture and art. You can attend several different summer events at the museum and its 17 acres of outdoor space, including yoga in the gardens every Thursday from 6 to 6:45 p.m. This all-level class is free with no registration required.

If you’d simply like to visit and explore the Dixon’s art collections and botanical gardens, it’s open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday (8 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month). Weekend hours are Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free for all guests through the end of 2024.
