Subaru Outback vs the Honda Competition in Memphis, TN

2021 Subaru Outback is an Orienteer's Choice Over Honda CR-V -- Discover Why at Jim Keras Subaru

There are a lot of everyday compact SUVs here in southwest Tennessee. The new Subaru Outback isn't one of them. It's more than just a commuter, weekend warrior, or occasional family road-tripper. It's a wagon-become-modern crossover built tough for heading off-road. Even many popular competitors, the new Honda CR-V prime among them, can't say the same, and head-to-head, it shows. Check out our matchup here at Jim Keras Subaru in Memphis to learn more.

2021 Subaru Outback vs 2019 Honda CR-V

The pride and flagship of the new Subaru car and SUV lineup, Outback easily handles the terrain in Bartlett and Cordova with a long 108-inch wheelbase, wide 60-plus-inch track, durable alloy wheels, and a towering 8.7 inches of ground clearance. LED Steering-responsive headlights are available in select trims to enable peering around corners before and as you turn, and roof rails come standard both for utility and an eye-catching accent. With a shorter wheelbase, sitting a little lower to the ground, no steering-responsive lighting, and roof rails only standard at the top of the line, CR-V doesn't quite measure up for the outdoors.

2019 Outback trims range from 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, and 2.5i Touring to the more powerful 3.6R Limited and 3.6R Touring. CR-V appears in only four, LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring. Honda doesn't offer any trim that's specifically high-performance.

The 256-horsepower, 3.5-liter SUBARU BOXER flat-six engine in higher trims dishes out 247 pound-feet of torque, making it both a ready accelerator and a workhorse when it comes to turning and pulling power. Those are power ratings that Honda and its base 184- and step-up 190-horsepower engines can't get close to.

Properly equip your new Outback, and you'll be able to tow up to 2,700 pounds. That's pop-up camp tent-, ATV-, dirt bike-, and light trailer-hauling territory. CR-V can only shoulder up to 1,500 pounds.

Interior and Technologies

For comfort on long trips, Outback is the roomier choice. It offers up to 108.1 cubic feet of space for passengers. The CR-V interior is quite a bit smaller, at 105.9 cubic feet.

With 6.5 and 8-inch SUBARU STARLINK Multimedia infotainment system options, Outback puts control of your entertainment as well as vehicle settings and function within reach. Options in CR-V are limited to 5- and 7-inch touchscreens.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are Outback standards, included in every trim. As such, so is your ability to connect a smartphone and access its apps and features from the display in the dash. CR-V only offers Apple and Android phone support in its EX trim and later.

Whether you're headed for parts unknown or just down I-40 towards Cordova, you'll need the dependable traction afforded by all-wheel drive, not to mention cornering precision of the Active Torque Vectoring. Both come standard in every Outback trim. The Subaru Symmetrical AWD system even incorporates an X-MODE for steering compensation during maneuvers. CR-V only has a Torque Distribution Monitor, it only comes standard in AWD models, and to get that system, you'll have to pay extra; it's optional.

Every Outback features EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, our automaker's proprietary suite of active safety and driver-assistance features. It helps keep you on track, maintain safe distances from traffic, and steer clear of accidents. The Honda Sensing system is similar, but it's not offered anywhere in the CR-V lineup. All that Honda offers is LaneWatch, a right-side vehicle-sensing system, which is only standard in the EX trim and higher.
